It would be an excellent picture were it not for the color. Did you take the picture? Did you use a filter or a gold reflector?

Yeah, but those are silver bars. That's the problem. It shouldn't be gold colored, artistic license notwithstanding.

I like that golden hue! It was achieved with the reflection from an old lamp shade.

The bars are :
PS Brand, PG & G Brand, C&C Brand, and a generic 12.6 oz
I grabbed most of them through APMEX ordering generics. I may have gotten one on ebay though.

I have sold most of them since the pic though and these pics were prior to my Ebay sales!

I will try to post some pics with different color and see what you guys think. BTW, With a title as such, I can't get away without posting more pictures!

Is this color somewhere in the middle??? ;)
These were aquired mostly through E-bay and a couple/few through APMEX. Nice little treasure eh'?

how did you make out of the ebay sales?

newmisty 10-16-2009 01:51 AM

Re: Generic Silver Pron

At little better than even, which was the plan at the time. Needed to liquidate a bit.

But those fees sure add up. I couldn't imagine selling oz's of gold and the e-bay end of auction percentages, though I hear when you are a power seller or whatnot, the percentages drop. I got hit with about $175 in fees selling $2,600 worth of silver.

The plus side is that they were quick easy sales. Minus one deabeat bidder. Good learning lesson on that one though.

Very nice images, newmisty. Sorry for giving you a hard time earlier.

The detail and microcontrast in the wood on the first picture is especially pleasing. The more subtle coloring of the last two images is likewise pleasing. Those last two images are the best. I especially like the second one in post #8.

Beautiful bars yes:553:

Want to sell some of the rounded ones?

Anyway nice shots, but the gold hue on silver is MOST deceiving we only have one yellow metal. All the rest IMO should look grey, mirror, or white. At first glance of first pic they look like old AU bars.

I know it is hard to photo this stuff

Only my 2 cents though. Keep up the good worK!

Re: Generic Silver Pron

Hi all, thanks for the responses. :)

I havent tried to sell anything here as I have only been registered for a week or so now. Besides, I am still trying to navigate this site and haven't even seen a fraction yet! It's honestly a little confusing with so many topics and sections, but I look forward to becoming a steady part of this great group!
Also, I am currently holding onto all of those bars in the last pic. They are personal favorites for the time being. I also paid handsomly for a few of them!

I agree about the gold hue making it look a bit too much like old gold, but to me, since it IS still Ag and there was no tricky photography/lighting used, I find the color pleasing and soothing!
Plus, how else am I supposed to dream about owning that much gold! lol j/k

Thanks for the critiques! Always welcomed, thats how we learn and grow.

I saw an episode of OVERHAULER on Discovery channel the other day and Chip FOOSE said that he'll never forget something his father had said to him as a boy; "It's what you learn after you already know everything that counts!" How true!

I'll often use an incandescent light to introduce gold highlights into a shot but there's no mistaking the coin for gold. A lot of times when the coins looks like gold, it is a camera color balance problem.

I love those antique bars as well! They are great pieces IMO! They will bring higher premiums are coin shows, fwiw, many collect them. I commonly see them at $2 over spot, laid out on the tables, and they seem to sell well.

That 1-oz "Octagon" shaped silver "eagle" is a very good find IMO. I have seen those sell for $50-$60 on ebay. I think that was minted in the early '70's (maybe 1974 mint year but not very sure on that).

Wow, thanks for the information OLJWjr!

And coopersmith, thanks for your info as well. I had to fight to win most of them in auctions where it seems the bidders spared no expense.

I have seen a 5 ozer on ebay go for $300+

Also saw a 1 oz nazi bar gor for over $1000!

Folk will pay what theyll pay, I regularly pick up these odd bars at spot from local dealers, only to see them laid out for much more than their weight at shows.

I think they are pretty, and old, and worth what you can get for them, but when I run my tally sheets I jot them down at spot:tongue_ma:

Dont get me wrong im hung up on old Engelhard 10 toz bars. They are nearly as pretty as my wife, and much shinier!

You are welcome Newmisty.

When you are dealing with silver art bars, especially old silver art bars from the 1970's you are dealing with what is called a "rarity" value. The nazi silver bar, for example, probably had a low mintage count to begin with and if that bar was minted sometime in the '70's then some of the nazi art bars were probably melted down in the early 1980's and therefore probably made that nazi art bar's "rarity" value increase. Ebay collectors recognize the "rarity" value in some of those silver art bars will will bid them up accordingly. I buy most of my silver art bars at my local coin shop and at coin shows. If I bid for a '70's art bar on ebay, I will set my max. bid to $4 over spot because that is the most that I am willing to spend on a silver art bar on ebay. My $4 over spot max. bid includes shipping costs. Needless to say, I get outbid on a regular basis on silver art bar auctions on ebay but when I win a '70's art bar auction on ebay, I end up usually paying less than $4 over spot for it.

There is a 5th edition silver art bar guide book on old silver art bars but I do not have it because it is very hard to find and if I find one on ebay, it will cost me about $250-$300.

If you sold it on Ebay as a 'Buy it Now' and the buyer used Bing to get cashback, they have a tendency to pull the trigger at higher levels. So without the buyer getting some of that $175 as rebate they may have only pulled the trigger at say 2475.

I'm seeing a lot of bars on ebay going for $2 - $3 above spot, while Apmex and tulving have them for 0.39 to 0.99 above spot. The ones that usually get snapped up are the ones that are 0.20 above spot or less after cashback.

So net-net if you are getting spot to spot + 0.50 after fees you are doing ok. If Bing cashback went away BIN would go off at lower prices.

T

I am not sure what the exact "rarity" value is on it but I do not see many of them on ebay. I think that "Octagon" round was minted in Canada but I am not sure. It is an "error" coin. The error is that even though it is stamped 1-oz, it weighs 1.5 troy Oz's according to some information that I found online. It was minted in 1973 by the Ron Hyer Mint. There are two "Octagon" type silver rounds. The first reverse type is the one with the Eagle surrounded by rings (see post #20).

Here is an another example of the first Octagon silver "round" (similar to post #20) and it gives more information about it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/RHY-1-ERROR-OCTA...item563301cd61

The second "Octagon" reverse type silver "round" will have two flags on the front but the difference on the reverse side is that instead of "rings" that surround the eagle like the example in the above web link (and post #20), this second reverse type "Octagon" round will have circular images of the different old U.S. coin types on it with an eagle in the middle of it. I could be wrong on the exact art work on the second reverse type of this "Octagon" silver round because I rarely see this reverse type on ebay (or anywhere else).

TA, It took me a while to find it but here is an example of the second "Octagon" reverse type silver "round":

http://cgi.ebay.com/Ron-Hyer-200-Yea...item53dd8ce6b1

TA, if it is still there and your dealer has it priced the same as other .999 generic silver rounds, then I would go ahead and get it because if there is one on ebay, it will cost you between $50-$60 on ebay.

EDIT: Sorry for taking so long. :signs14: This was a challenge for me because I did not know that much about this silver "Octagon" round except that it sold for a fairly large amount of FRN's on ebay. I am still in the learning process about the many '70's silver art bars that were minted.

Good luck with the ebay auction. I probably should have mentioned that the links that I gave as examples for TA, are BIN prices. If you do a regular auction style, the winning bid will probably be less than $50 but you will get much more than whatever you paid for it IMO. I apologize for not mentioning this. :signs14:

I am sorry if, I failed to mention that but even with a regular auction it still will fetch a big premium IMO. A BIN of $50 for the Octagon silver might not sell right away and it might rack up ebay re-listing fees if you have to repeatedly re-list it on ebay with a BIN of $50.

IMO, your best bet would be a regular auction for the Octagon silver. With that said, a silver art bar price guide might say that the Octagon silver "round" has a "rarity" value of $50 but it may not necessarily mean that you will get that in an ebay auction. The ebay market place will always determine the worth of a silver art bar.

I am very sorry if I did not mention that in my earlier post. :signs14:

I am experienced enough with silver and e-bay, I was just looking for something else to put up. In the process of liquidating a few things in order to aquire a few more! lol

I don't expect to get much on the piece, but I'm sure it'll fetch at least $20, and that's good enough for me.

Thanks for your information and concern. Your sincerity is greatly appreciated!

I think that it will fetch more than $20 on ebay based on the few past auctions on that particular silver piece. I have seen a winning bid for that Octagon silver for about $30 in a regular ebay auction but that was a long time ago. You never know how the ebay sellers will value that Octagon silver "round". Even if I am wrong about it getting a $30 winning ebay bid, you will still get more for it on ebay than what you paid for it. Either way you will be in good shape IMO.

Good luck with the ebay auction Newmisty. :s1:
